Is This What an Adult Looks Like?

First-off, sorry for not having a post on Monday. This weekend I ate something that made me feel really sick, and I took the day off, from work and blogging. I did sport an 'athleisure' look, that I may post on Saturday, and break my cardinal rule of "no weekend" posts. However, today I have the first in this week's series of looks, titled "Adults I Admire."

Today my mother is coming to stay with me for 10 days. In my mother's mind I'm still that teenager who she sent off to college in thrifted vintage dresses and Doc Martens. Though the Doc Martens still remain, I'm now an adult, who wears more mature clothes. For example, today I matched a cranberry, cashmere sweater that was a gift from my mother, and a knee-length plaid skirt thrifted from Japan.

Sometimes I wonder if knee-length skirts that are high-waisted make my hips and butt look bigger, especially when there's pleats. However, I will say that with the maroon heels from ModCloth the knee-length skirt looks very appropriate. For a more mature look, I also wore my hair in a different style, with my ears out. Growing up I had this nervous habit of tucking my hair behind my ears. When I got to high school, I tried to break the habit. As a result, I hardly ever wear my hair in a style that shows my ears.

Another aspect of this 'adulting' series I'm trying is to change my thinking. Instead of focusing on whether or not I look big or fat in something, I want to focus on having fun in my clothes.I started this blog in order to put myself out there, to force myself to take risks. I'm hoping that this week, with my mom here, I'll be able to look at myself with different eyes, an adult's eyes.

Adulting: Day 2 Office Appropriate Makeup

A continuation of my Adulting series, I'm going to take a step away from fashion and turn to work-appropriate makeup. I'm a huge fan of bright color mascara and gothic lipstick, but somehow I don't think my office co-workers appreciate my unique color palette. Now normally, I'm all about you-do-you advice, but adulting is all about me trying to learn more about the adult world. That's why I'm going to try a very conservative and bland makeup look. I traded in my dark purple Kat Von D lipstick for a nude pink Kat Von D lipstick and toned down the amount of dark eye shadow for a very simple look. Though being professional doesn't mean you have to be bland--think of sexy wide-leg pantsuits partnered with a lace bralette instead of a basic top--my regular look is very cutesy. As I transition into a full-time worker, I want to present a side of myself that can be serious, that can be an adult, and that is professional.  It doesn't help that...

Adulting Part 3: Get Some Knee High Boots

Do you ever feel like your outfit is just 'bleh,' bland, blah, boring? I do, all the time. For instance, today I was running late, and trying to get dressed for work. All my brain could put together were these black skinny jeans from Urban Outfitters, and this tan turtleneck from Banana Republic. By themselves, kind of a dull outfit, sure. But if you spice it up with some knee-high suede boots, then it becomes a fun outfit. These skinny jeans from Urban, are tight, not gonna lie. They're form-fitting, and at times can cut-off my circulation, but I do like the way my butt looks in them. I will give Urban credit, though; these jeans have maintained their black color way better than a pair from American Eagle did. One thing I like about Banana Republic is that they have a petites section. I'm 5'3," and regular sizes tend to fit width-wise, but length-wise it can be too long. This sweater hits just right at the start of my hips, instead of belo...

High Waisted Jeans CAN Be Flattering!

For some of us, this might not be news. High-Waisted jeans, shorts, and bathing suit bottoms have been a long time trend and occasional style staple for the fashionista—especially if you rock vintage looks. But, I have to be honest. Sometimes I wonder if high-waisted mom jeans on a pear-shaped-wide-hipped-woman (like myself) are a good look. Sure on a tall and thin model, the high-waisted jeans emphasize what I like to call the ideal ‘hip-to-thigh ratio,’ making them look not too feminine but not too masculine—perfect androgyny. There’s no mistaking my feminine figure. Now I love my body—thunder thighs and all—but the worst feeling is when you don’t feel as if your clothes flatter your natural shape. After all, you spent hard-earned cash on them; they should fit your body shape, not the other way around. Sometimes we fashion pioneers feel think this means we have to avoid certain styles. Short girls beware the maxi dress that makes you look like a child; only the flat che...
