Adulting: Day 1 Rocking a Blazer at Work

In case it wasn't obvious, I'm relatively young for the work force. At 22 I'm torn between wearing my favorite trendy and affordable outfits from Forever 21 and that mature A-line dress from the Banana Republic. The modern day office is a tricky environment to navigate. So for this week, I'm going to be doing a series of posts focused on adulting in the workplace.

For my first outfit of the week, I choose to rock the classic work staple, the blazer.

The first blazer I ever bought was a bright tropical orange. It came equipped with a single clasp instead of buttons and had no room for trivial things like pockets. I wore to school--sometimes--when I wanted to look extra smart. Once college started the blazer did not follow me off to Massachusetts; it earned a permanent spot in the back of my closet.

Then senior year began as did a horrible series of unpleasant job interviews. Yet, I was without a blazer. Concerned, my mother took me to H&M where I bought two blazers--light pink and black--purely for job interviews. Again, the two blazers remained at the back of my dorm room closet for the majority of the year.

Now that I'm officially out-and-about in the work force I've found the blazer to be more cumbersome than ever. I'm not the smallest french fry in the box, and the natural padding and tight sleeves of even the blackest blazers only highlight my potato body. Not sexy. I'd much rather wear one of my cute floral dresses or preppy skirts to work, but sometimes I feel a little silly in my sundress and jean jacket at office meetings.

Fashion isn't just about looking good; it's mostly about feeling good. When you feel good in your clothes you'll look your best. So I set out to find a way to feel sexy and comfortable in my blazers.

The trick? Making sure that you're wearing the blazer and not the other way around. Paired with tapered silk slacks from the Banana Republic and a basic white tee from Monki, I found a way to combine mature and relaxed style.

*My top tip: I always feel way sexier in a pair of awesome shoes. These open back gray suede block heels from Zara added a bit of jazz to my step and ultimately made me feel like an adult.

Is This What an Adult Looks Like?

First-off, sorry for not having a post on Monday. This weekend I ate something that made me feel really sick, and I took the day off, from work and blogging. I did sport an 'athleisure' look, that I may post on Saturday, and break my cardinal rule of "no weekend" posts. However, today I have the first in this week's series of looks, titled "Adults I Admire." Today my mother is coming to stay with me for 10 days. In my mother's mind I'm still that teenager who she sent off to college in thrifted vintage dresses and Doc Martens. Though the Doc Martens still remain, I'm now an adult, who wears more mature clothes. For example, today I matched a cranberry, cashmere sweater that was a gift from my mother, and a knee-length plaid skirt thrifted from Japan. Sometimes I wonder if knee-length skirts that are high-waisted make my hips and butt look bigger, especially when there's pleats. However, I will say that with the maroon...

Floral Dress with Doc Martens

There’s nothing more fun than mixing and matching different styles! A summer trend I’ve seen from Autum Rain (@autumrainn) and other fashion bloggers is pairing a floral summer dress with Doc Marten boots. It’s a harmonious mix of sweet and tough, punk and girly. Today I’m going to walk you through the ups and downs of wearing an outfit like this around town. I actually wear my black Doc Marten boots often, even to work. A gift from my mother who was supportive of my punk-goth phase, I’ve worn these Doc Martens since I was twelve, making them officially twelve years old today. Since I first got them, these boots have gone through many fashion trends; paired with skinny jeans and a black shirt, they made the perfect emo outfit I wore in middle school; at sixteen I graduated to wearing them with floral skirts and black tights for a retro-grunge look; and now they are great for managing Boston’s snow covered, cobblestone streets. For the summer, most people don’...

Adulting with a Twist

Continuing our series on adulating, I’ve matched a sweater with a high-waisted skirt with pleats. But wait, isn’t that what I wore yesterday? Why yes, keen eye my friend, it is. After all, most people wear a variation of the same outfit everyday. I know, Kate would label us all ‘outfit repeaters.’ However, just because you wear the same type of outfit, doesn’t mean you can’t spice it up a bit with a little character. Notice the addition of strategic accessories in today’s outfit. The scarf, a French twist on the red, white and blue motif, screams, “I’m a working adult, who pays their bills.” Or, for some, it screams flight attendant. The dark navy of the scarf pairs well with the black, above-the-knee skirt from H&M. Similarly, the beige sweater—also from H&M—offsets the dark neutral tones in the skirt with the lighter whites, without being too matchy-matchy. For a bit of personal flare, I’ve included a beige, wool beret from Urban Outfitters that is indicati...
