Wide Hips and High-Waisted Jeans

Today was my day to rock high-waisted jeans at work. Luckily my office has a pretty lax dress code; I've seen people wear jeans everyday with no consequences. So today was my today to shake things up and to try an outfit I've been avoiding.

High-waisted bottoms have been a thing since long before 2018. They were present in the 50's and 60's, and were meant to accentuate the female form, specifically by elongating the legs. However, if you've been keeping with modern fashion, then you know that the new trend is to show off a thigh gap, or small waist leading to hips that narrow into thin thighs. I do not have this figure, and I don't think I ever will. Sometimes I let that thought keep me from wearing these cute high-waisted Monki jeans. But not today.

Today, I matched the jeans with a new turtleneck sweater from Banana Republic, for a simple but chic feel. Though, when I wore it I felt more like an 80's character—in a good way. To make things a little more fashionable, I paired it with a white vegan leather moto jacket from ModCloth. Yes I know, I have a lot of things from ModCloth. That took the outfit to a whole new level.

Normally I would have just worn the moto jacket by itself, but it's freaking cold outside! So of course, I just wore the jacket underneath my coat. It was so warm. Worth it.

For accessories, I just used a thin belt to accentuate my waist, but also cause I thought it added a cool feel. For my hair, I took another note from Bardot's lookbook. Maybe one fo these days I'll do a vlog about how to maintain this gray hair mess I have.

Adulting with a Twist

Continuing our series on adulating, I’ve matched a sweater with a high-waisted skirt with pleats. But wait, isn’t that what I wore yesterday? Why yes, keen eye my friend, it is. After all, most people wear a variation of the same outfit everyday. I know, Kate would label us all ‘outfit repeaters.’ However, just because you wear the same type of outfit, doesn’t mean you can’t spice it up a bit with a little character. Notice the addition of strategic accessories in today’s outfit. The scarf, a French twist on the red, white and blue motif, screams, “I’m a working adult, who pays their bills.” Or, for some, it screams flight attendant. The dark navy of the scarf pairs well with the black, above-the-knee skirt from H&M. Similarly, the beige sweater—also from H&M—offsets the dark neutral tones in the skirt with the lighter whites, without being too matchy-matchy. For a bit of personal flare, I’ve included a beige, wool beret from Urban Outfitters that is indicati...

Adulting: Day 2 Office Appropriate Makeup

A continuation of my Adulting series, I'm going to take a step away from fashion and turn to work-appropriate makeup. I'm a huge fan of bright color mascara and gothic lipstick, but somehow I don't think my office co-workers appreciate my unique color palette. Now normally, I'm all about you-do-you advice, but adulting is all about me trying to learn more about the adult world. That's why I'm going to try a very conservative and bland makeup look. I traded in my dark purple Kat Von D lipstick for a nude pink Kat Von D lipstick and toned down the amount of dark eye shadow for a very simple look. Though being professional doesn't mean you have to be bland--think of sexy wide-leg pantsuits partnered with a lace bralette instead of a basic top--my regular look is very cutesy. As I transition into a full-time worker, I want to present a side of myself that can be serious, that can be an adult, and that is professional.  It doesn't help that...

Wearing a Slip Dress to Work

Provocative as this title might sound, I try to keep everything PG at the office. I'm lucky that the dress code at the non-profit I work for is business-casual (a complicated term that I'm still trying to define). I've taken the suggested dress code to mean that I can still experiment with cute fashion trends without selling my soul to corporate culture. Case-in-point, I showed up to work in a slip dress. Now for those who have somehow messed the retro-90's fashion trends that have slowly taken over social media, the slip dress was a 90's statement that graced the slim bodies of models like Kate Moss. The look was elegant evening wear that reminded everyone of nocturnal activities. Not exactly work appropriate. My favorite example of the slip dress comes from Jennifer Garner in 13 Going on 30. The confused actress shows up to work in nothing but her night wear and a fashionable coat. Of course, in Hollywood a woman can get away with this, but what about tho...
