Wide Hips and High-Waisted Jeans

Today was my day to rock high-waisted jeans at work. Luckily my office has a pretty lax dress code; I've seen people wear jeans everyday with no consequences. So today was my today to shake things up and to try an outfit I've been avoiding.

High-waisted bottoms have been a thing since long before 2018. They were present in the 50's and 60's, and were meant to accentuate the female form, specifically by elongating the legs. However, if you've been keeping with modern fashion, then you know that the new trend is to show off a thigh gap, or small waist leading to hips that narrow into thin thighs. I do not have this figure, and I don't think I ever will. Sometimes I let that thought keep me from wearing these cute high-waisted Monki jeans. But not today.

Today, I matched the jeans with a new turtleneck sweater from Banana Republic, for a simple but chic feel. Though, when I wore it I felt more like an 80's character—in a good way. To make things a little more fashionable, I paired it with a white vegan leather moto jacket from ModCloth. Yes I know, I have a lot of things from ModCloth. That took the outfit to a whole new level.

Normally I would have just worn the moto jacket by itself, but it's freaking cold outside! So of course, I just wore the jacket underneath my coat. It was so warm. Worth it.

For accessories, I just used a thin belt to accentuate my waist, but also cause I thought it added a cool feel. For my hair, I took another note from Bardot's lookbook. Maybe one fo these days I'll do a vlog about how to maintain this gray hair mess I have.

Floral Dress with Doc Martens

There’s nothing more fun than mixing and matching different styles! A summer trend I’ve seen from Autum Rain (@autumrainn) and other fashion bloggers is pairing a floral summer dress with Doc Marten boots. It’s a harmonious mix of sweet and tough, punk and girly. Today I’m going to walk you through the ups and downs of wearing an outfit like this around town. I actually wear my black Doc Marten boots often, even to work. A gift from my mother who was supportive of my punk-goth phase, I’ve worn these Doc Martens since I was twelve, making them officially twelve years old today. Since I first got them, these boots have gone through many fashion trends; paired with skinny jeans and a black shirt, they made the perfect emo outfit I wore in middle school; at sixteen I graduated to wearing them with floral skirts and black tights for a retro-grunge look; and now they are great for managing Boston’s snow covered, cobblestone streets. For the summer, most people don’...

High Waisted Jeans CAN Be Flattering!

For some of us, this might not be news. High-Waisted jeans, shorts, and bathing suit bottoms have been a long time trend and occasional style staple for the fashionista—especially if you rock vintage looks. But, I have to be honest. Sometimes I wonder if high-waisted mom jeans on a pear-shaped-wide-hipped-woman (like myself) are a good look. Sure on a tall and thin model, the high-waisted jeans emphasize what I like to call the ideal ‘hip-to-thigh ratio,’ making them look not too feminine but not too masculine—perfect androgyny. There’s no mistaking my feminine figure. Now I love my body—thunder thighs and all—but the worst feeling is when you don’t feel as if your clothes flatter your natural shape. After all, you spent hard-earned cash on them; they should fit your body shape, not the other way around. Sometimes we fashion pioneers feel think this means we have to avoid certain styles. Short girls beware the maxi dress that makes you look like a child; only the flat che...

Wearing a Maxi Dress When You're Short

Don't let the platform sandals fool you, I'm only 5 feet and 4 inches tall. In America, that seems like an average height for a woman. But when I shop I often have to wear petites. This is especially true now that I shop at higher-end stores whose target audience is young, working women. For example, I can't wear Anthropologie's regular sized clothes, even if they are my usual size. Then there's all those rules about wearing maxi skirts and dresses when you're short. You've heard the rules. "Wearing a maxi dress will make you look even shorter," they say. I also once heard someone say never mix patterns, but that rule has long since been revoked. Now I think it's time to make a motion to end this "no maxi dresses for short people" rule. I love maxi skirts and dresses, which is why I broke down and bought this off-white maxi dress from Clad and Cloth after months of seeing the dress in my Instagram feed. The en...
