For some of us, this might not be news. High-Waisted jeans, shorts, and bathing suit bottoms have been a long time trend and occasional style staple for the fashionista—especially if you rock vintage looks. But, I have to be honest. Sometimes I wonder if high-waisted mom jeans on a pear-shaped-wide-hipped-woman (like myself) are a good look.
Sure on a tall and thin model, the high-waisted jeans emphasize what I like to call the ideal ‘hip-to-thigh ratio,’ making them look not too feminine but not too masculine—perfect androgyny. There’s no mistaking my feminine figure.
Now I love my body—thunder thighs and all—but the worst feeling is when you don’t feel as if your clothes flatter your natural shape. After all, you spent hard-earned cash on them; they should fit your body shape, not the other way around. Sometimes we fashion pioneers feel think this means we have to avoid certain styles. Short girls beware the maxi dress that makes you look like a child; only the flat chested get to wear plunging or revealing necklines; and you better wear a thong if you’re going bodycon.
I’m tired of these old-fashioned rules. I want to wear what I want.
So this weekend I wore high-waisted mom jeans and let my thighs and hips take control. My advice? Don’t let an obsession with size hold you back. The best thing you can do for you and your beautiful body is buying clothes that fit! Sounds great in theory, but it can be challenging when you’ve had body issues in the past. I speak from experience.
Though I can honestly say, when it came to mom jeans, I found the looser the better—for me. Because my hips are naturally wide and prominent, I wanted jeans that would fit snug around them, but would be loose enough for my thighs. That’s why I choose these straight legged Monki Jeans I picked up in Tokyo. They fit me just right and make me feel sexy not constricted. Paired with this cute embellished top from Zara that rocks 18th century vintage the outfit combines two looks: delicate and practical.
